Furthermore, the title Christ would likely have been understood by Gentiles to signify someone who had been medicinally anointed or rubbed with oil in preparation for an athletic contest, and so would not have suggested to them the significant notion of “God’s Anointed One” or the idea of supremacy. The title Lord, by contrast, would have conveyed to Gentiles the note of supremacy, needing then only clarification regarding the nature of that supremacy.
